Here are some instructions as of December 20, 1986 for playing the
games on the BIBLE Games diskette. These instructions correspond to
version 3.0 of the Bible Games.
These games are designed to help the player learn some basic facts
from the Bible while having some fun. They are designed for ease of
use and may be enjoyed by people of all ages. An older person may
need to assist young children, but experience has shown that even very
young children enjoy playing the games.
These instructions are divided into four (4) sections:
1. Instructions for starting the program.
2. Instructions for playing the CHARACTER CHALLENGE game.
3. Instructions for creating your own "Clues" files.
4. Instructions for playing the CREATION game.

Instructions for starting the program
System requirements:
IBM PC or true compatible
DOS version 2.0 or higher
128k RAM
Double-sided, double-density 5-1/4" diskette drive
Color Graphics Adapter (but either monochrome or color monitor)
required for Creation game. Character Challenge will run on
either the monochrone adapter or the Color Graphics Adapter.
Boot your computer as you normally do. Put the BIBLE diskette into
the default diskette drive. Then, at the DOS prompt, type in "bible"
and press <ENTER>.
If you have a Color Graphics Adapter in your computer, the first thing
you will see on your screen is the question "Do you have a color
monitor? (y or n)" Type 'y' or 'n' depending on whether you do or
don't have a color screen.
Then you will be asked "Do you want sound (beeps and songs)?" Type 'y'
if you want the program to send sound to the computer's speaker, or
'n' if you do not want sound. The songs are in the CREATION game.
Both games use beeps to alert the player to certain items of
information.
Once the program has started, you will be presented with a "menu" for
choosing which game you want to play. Use the "UP" and "DOWN" arrow
keys (or ^E and ^X) to display the name of the game you want to play
in yellow (or highlighted on a monochrome screen) and press <ENTER> to
start up that game. Keep in mind that if your computer does not have
a Color Graphics Adapter in it, you will only be able to play the
Character Challenge game.
If you want to return to the menu during the running of either game,
press the <ESC> key when you are instructed to press <ENTER> (or any
key) to continue.
The main program may be stopped by pressing <ESC> when the
game-choosing "menu" is displayed.
At the very beginning of each game, you are asked if you want
instructions to play the game. Press "y" if you do, and "n" if you do
not.

Instructions for playing the CHARACTER CHALLENGE game
When this game starts, you will be instructed to make sure a "Clues"
diskette is in the default diskette drive. Normally, you may simply
press <ENTER>, since the games diskette will already be in that drive,
and it contains some "Clues" files. If you have some "Clues" files on
another diskette, put that diskette into the default drive and press
<ENTER>. (See below for instructions regarding creating your own
"clues" files.)
You will be presented with the titles from as many "Clues" files as
are on the diskette you put into the default drive, up to a maximum of
20 "Clues" files. Type the number corresponding to the Title of the
clues you want to play, and press <ENTER>.
You will now be presented with the names of up to 20 Bible characters.
Use the arrow keys (or ^E, ^X, ^D, and ^S) to highlight (with the
white box) your choice, based on the clue presented. Then press
<ENTER>. If you are correct, you will be given a summary list of all
of the clues for that character, so you can study the rest of the
clues for the next time you play these clues and characters. If you
are wrong, another clue will be presented for the SAME character. You
may receive up to 12 clues for each character. When the clues for
that character are exhausted (some have as few as 3 or 4!), you will
be shown the character's name but will not receive credit for a
correct choice.
When you have completed all of the characters on the file, or after
you have pressed <ESC> to stop the game, you will be given the
statistics for your session and then asked if you want to play again.
Press any key (except <ESC>) to play again. Press <ESC> to end. If
you play again, you will be asked if you want to replay the "clues"
file you just played. Respond with "y" for "yes" or "n" for "no". If
you respond with "y", the game will immediately restart. If you
respond with "n", the program will again ask you to pick the "clues"
file you want to play. Type in the number corresponding to the Clues
Title you want to play, and press <ENTER>.
Note that each time you play the CHARACTER CHALLENGE game, the
characters are presented to you in a different order. And each
character's clues are also presented to you in a different order. You
would have to play this game many, many times to exhaust all of the
possible combinations of character and clue order.
Also note that when you have made a correct choice of character, or
the character's clues have been exhausted, that character's name is
moved to the bottom of the screen.

Instructions for creating your own "Clues" files
One of the features of this game is the ability to create or modify
your own "clues" files. You will need some kind of text editor to
create your own "clues" files. You may, of course, use the DOS EDLIN
program, but a full-screen editor or word processor program would be
most convenient. Here are the rules you must follow for a successful
file:
a) The file should be a standard ASCII file, with up to 80
letters per line. Start each line in column 1.
b) The file name must be INITCLUE.FX, where X may be any number
up to 20. Each file must have a unique value for X. Please
note that there are 4 "Clues" files on the BIBLE diskette
already, so the next file name in sequence will be INITCLUE.F5
in this scheme.
c) The first line should be the TITLE for the session, for
example, "Old Testament Characters I".
d) For EACH character, the first line in that character's set of
clues must be the character's name, preceded by the letters
"Char ". Note that the program will look specifically for
"Char ", with an upper-case first letter. For example,
"Char Noah". The character's name may be up to 15 letters
(and spaces) in length.
e) For EACH character, follow the "Char " line with up to 12
clues, each clue up to 80 letters (one line) in length. If
you put more than 12 clues, the first 11 will be read, and
then the last one will become number 12, so any extras between
11 and the last will be ignored.
f) Here is a sample of what a "clues" file will look like:
New Testament Characters I
Char Andrew
You are a man.
You are an apostle of Jesus.
You brought Peter to Jesus.
You are a fisherman.
You called Jesus' attention to the boy with five loaves and two fish.
Char Bartholomew
You are a man.
Your other name is Nathanael.
You are an apostle of Jesus.
You said, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"

Instructions for playing the CREATION game
(If you do not have a Color Graphics Adapter in your computer, you
will not be able to play the CREATION game. In fact, the main menu
will not even display CREATION as a choice.)
For each "day" of creation that you are playing, you will be shown a
series of small pictures representing the events of the seven days of
creation. Your task is to choose the picture that shows which event
you think occurred on the day of creation shown by the large number at
the right of the screen. Use the arrow keys (or ^E, ^X, ^D, and ^S)
to move the "brown" (highlighted on a monochrome monitor) frame around
your choice. Note that the words describing the events also turn
brown (highlighted) to show which event you are choosing. When you
have made your choice, press <ENTER>.
If you are correct, you will be shown a full-screen picture of the
event. If you are incorrect, you will be given a clue and instructed
to try again. After a correct choice's picture has been displayed,
press any key to see the Bible verses that describe that day's events.
When these Bible verses are on the screen, you may then press 'S' (for
"Swap") to go back and see this day's picture again. Then you may
press 'S' to get back to the Bible verses, and so on until you press
any other key (besides 'S', that is) to continue on with the next day.
Note that each time you have made a correct choice, the small picture
for that day's event is moved to the bottom of the main ("choice")
screen and placed in proper sequence. Also note that the choices are
presented in a different order across the top of the screen almost
every time you play the CREATION game.
